Life Cycle Assessments: Measuring our environmental impact

Every BRIGHT product is assessed for its environmental footprint, from design to end-of-life. Sustainability can be measured, here is how we do it.

We use life cycle assessments (LCAs) to understand the full environmental impact of our products, from raw materials to end-of-life. This allows us to design smarter, reduce emissions, and stay transparent.

What is an LCA?

An LCA is a science-based method that tracks the environmental impact of a product throughout its life. It usually considers every stage:

  • Raw materials
  • Production
  • Transport
  • Use
  • End-of-life (recycling or disposal)

Why does it matter?

BRIGHT manages environmental impact at every stage of the product lifecycle

LCAs help us:

  • Cut emissions and waste where it matters most
  • Design products for a circular economy
  • Communicate our impact with honesty and clarity

There are two main approaches we use:

Cradle-to-grave: Covers every stage of a product’s life. It measures environmental impacts from raw material extraction through manufacturing, usage, and final disposal.

Cradle-to-gate: Measures impacts from raw material extraction to the factory gate. It excludes usage and disposal.

Key findings: Our product carbon footprints

Each BRIGHT product is subject to a rigorous environmental assessment, conducted in accordance with EN 15804+A2, ISO 14025 and ISO 21930 standards.

The findings are published in publicly available Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), standardised documents that are independently verified by a third party. These declarations provide a transparent overview of each product’s environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle, from raw material extraction and manufacturing to use and end-of-life disposal.

Here’s what the numbers show (measured in carbon dioxide equivalent, CO₂e):


Sol Basic Capacity

Cradle-to-gate: 3.95 kg of CO₂e
Cradle-to-grave: 5.3 kg of CO₂e

5.3 kg of CO₂e is equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions produced by an average petrol-powered passenger vehicle driving for 21.73 kilometres (13.5 miles).


Sol Mid Capacity

BRIGHT's Sol is a durable, repairable, sustainable solar lamp built for humanitarian aid and emergency use. It features casing made from 100% recycled plastic, is weatherproof and has an integrated mobile phone charger

Cradle-to-gate: 3.98 kg of CO₂e
Cradle-to-grave: 5.32 kg of CO₂e

5.32 kg of CO₂e is equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions produced by an average petrol-powered passenger vehicle driving for 21.73 kilometres (13.5 miles).


Sol High Capacity

SunBell 2.0

Cradle-to-gate: 3.16 kg of CO₂e
Cradle-to-grave: 4.72 kg of CO₂e

4.72 kg of CO₂e is equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions produced by an average petrol-powered passenger vehicle driving for 19.31 kilometres (12 miles).


SunBell 80

Cradle-to-gate: 3.5 kg of CO₂e
Cradle-to-grave: 5.06 kg of CO₂e

5.06 kg of CO₂e is equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions produced by an average petrol-powered passenger vehicle driving for 20.76 kilometres (12.9 miles).
